Not that kind of girl…

Hallo la! Guess who? Chicken poo! JK! It’s Eileen signing in!

I’m a nearly 27 year-old female who has just been kicked out of her parents’ house. I’ve also been badgered to the point where I couldn’t handle living with them anymore – thankfully it’s now mutual! Imagine being berated every day to FIND A JOB and to CLEAN UP THE HOUSE TO CLEAN THEIR MESSES. Can you believe that? I have THREE degrees; I deserve to be worshipped!  Whatever, I’ve milked them long enough…  I initially tried to move in with my brother, but he turned me down because he thought his house wasn’t BIG enough for 3 people. He said that it’d be best for me to get a place of my own. What… the… EFF?! I’ve since then disowned my brother for turning into my parents, except for when I can get something out of him of course.

Luckily, I know of a Chartered Traveller who introduced me to some of his legit friends, and next thing you know… two weeks later I’ve moved in with a guy who is literally a complete stranger to me, who my Chartered Traveller friend only picked up at an airport just a few months ago.  I’ve always told others that I wasn’t that kind of girl, but…oh well, you gotta live a little, right? And right now, I’m so desperate that I can’t be bothered with trying to maintain atrociously false images of myself. Anyway, good thing is… my roommate and I both love cats!

Since taking the plunge, I haven’t looked back, it’s been great! (I also got my disowned brother to help me move in to my new place… CHUMP!!!)  In many parts of the world, it’s common for women to travel solo and independently. In my home country, it’s not. I joined this blog to show you what it’s like for women like me to take charge and make that leap from living at home to living abroad.  There is a lot of bullshit out there designed to scare women away from moving out on their own, but I’m here to clean up those myths.

I’m also here to preach about the idea of not staying tied down, e.g. never owning property and/or motor vehicles. Living pay cheque to pay cheque is key. Some say it’s crazy… but so worth it! YOLO! The only thing I don’t really get though is that I really want to travel, but how do I pay for flights if I’m spending all my savings instead of saving anything? My mom told me to do this though, and it’s the one thing she says that I have chosen to abide by, so I’m hoping everything will work out for me on the travel front – this is her chance to prove herself to me.

How I Travel

eileen_CT_CT

Most of my travel and experiences are done on a strict budget. This means me bumming rides from this random I’m moving in with (free gas and no Calgary transit!) and buying cheap boxes of wines for $5. Shamefully, I’ve been relegated to also taking public transit every day; however, what I love even more is public shaming public transit when they’re not providing me services that I demand (which is EVERY EFFING DAY)! I’ve started a Twitter account that allows me to perform this public shaming anonymously! I’ve amassed a huge follower base who share the same sentiments about my city’s horrendously poor transit service, contaminated by ignorant and rude riders.

I wouldn’t classify myself as a professional, but I still feel I can contribute to this travel blog. I do, after all, have two Master’s degrees.  Choosing to live a life of travel and couchsurfing with strangers to save a buck is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I’m glad you’ve come along for the ride.

Best,
Eileen S.
